Oral Roberts University’s “First Lady” has plunged the school in controversy. What’s that, you say? A Word-Faith/Prosperity Gospel proponent involved in a financial scandal? Weird…

Interesting post by Dr. Mohler on evolutionary worldview.

Drew recently initiated an interesting conversation about false teachers/teaching at the IHOP/onething forum. I sort of hijacked it toward the end (sorry, Drew), but it is very enlightening.

    Jim,
huh!…. I got down as far as this and had to ask:

Since when did you and Drew become life partners?
    …..giggle…. giggle…=)

I’m not a big Ann Coulter fan, but this article made me laugh. While her comments on Judaism and Christianity are horribly imprecise, I think the host’s insistence on painting them in the worst possible light are even more illuminating.

    Jim,

Just saw this news item about an atheist broadcasting station that is going national, on Air America, hosted by a former Christian evangelical minister.

Don’t worry - it will be off the air in six months.

The second article is John Piper’s rebuttal to the first. The issue is divorce. As usual, I agree with Piper.

In my short life, I have been continuously amazed and saddened at how easily professing believers break their marriage covenants. Reading the first article from Christianity Today, I begin to see why.

I was just sent this link to a Sufjan Stevens song/mp3. It is the first track off his excellent, and Christian themed, Seven Swans.

    Enjoy!

    Jim,

I saw your post on SOJ. I want to thank you for bringing it back to center (the topic). I was beginning to get a bit confused with the discussion and was feeling a bit swayed the other way about BP. But after I read your post I began to pray and ask God to re-align me to the truth and this is what I sensed or should I say this is what came to mind.

Go back to the beginning! I felt like I was to go back and actually test the original prophesy that Mike Bickle got in Egypt. The truth is that if that prophecy does not line up with the Word then it was false and everything that has been done or built on that foundation is shaky at best and built on sand. In his (Bickle) “word” he states that “Christianity will be changed as it is known on the face of the earth” and I find three scriptures right off the bat that states that “God never changes”. This tells me that what was and is already established in His word will not change and that there is no change of Christianity and that all the revelation we need is from the scriptures and what ever the Holy Spirit might show us within the context of the Word.

Theology (good or bad) will determine our methods and I believe that the poor theology of IHOP/Prophetic Movement/Sons of God/Joels Army/Third Wave has developed a poor method (BP/H&B). THis would also include PDL Churches, Emergent Churches, etc.

by D.A. Carson, “Divine Sovereignty and Human Responsibility–Biblical Perspectives in Tension.

“I would be prepared to argue that any Christian leader’s handling of the tension between divine sovereignty and human responsibility will affect large areas of his theological understanding, evangelistic practices, and ecclesiastical methods. This is not to say that the tension by itself is determinative, still less that genuinely devout men and woman can be found only within the camp of one ecclesiastical or theological tradition. Nevertheless, the sovereignty-responsibility tension certainly affects the outlook of the individual. More significantly, the local church, or some larger identifiable group such as a denomination or a segment of a denomination, is massively influenced by the shape of the sovereignty-responsibility tension which is promulgated (implicitly or explicitly) within its borders and believed to be true.”

That statement is hinting at when I say “theology determines methodology.” Bravo Dr. Carson!

Once again Thank you and blessings on you

Mark Jr. forwarded me an email encouraging a boycott of the upcoming film, The Golden Compass. Generally, I am wary of boycotts. If we examine closely enough any corporation or organization, we will find some kind of unseemly behavior or association.

Having said that, I checked out the official movie site and the wikipedia entries on the novel and author. The movie looks pretty sweet, but I think this may be a legitimate time to “just say no” as a Christian.

    God Bless

As a pasty-white Minnesotan, I hesitate to comment about race issues. Jason Whitlock at FOX Sports, however, has written a very provocative, and - I think - spot-on, piece in the wake of the Sean Taylor murder.

What? Benny Hinn not complying with Sen. Grassley’s inquiry into televangelists’ use of tax-free IRS status? I thought Hinn’s ministry was a paragon of financial transparency and accountability…

Sorry, that was probably laying the sarcasm on a little thick.

I don’t find that surprising at all, in lieu of the fact that he has consistently refused to provide verifiable documentation of his claims for healing over the years, even to Christian ministries who have requested it.

  19. 19 Mary December 7, 2007 at 5:33 pm

I was a bit shocked when i caught cbn yesterday and heard Pat Robertson defending the 6 tele-evangelists. He said Grassley doesn’t have the authority and is not supported by the other senators.

    Jim,

Here’s one you may find interesting. Science is at it again, trying to disprove Christianity.

    Mbaker,

I guess I don’t get it. I don’t know anyone who believes “faith is a singular operation of the brain ” and not “essentially the same as other kinds of knowing or thinking.” I have no idea what that would prove or disprove.

If Harris is able to demonstrate that I believe Christ is divine in the same way I believe 2 + 2 = 4 and that Chevrolet builds pickups, wouldn’t that simply demonstrate the sincerity and conviction of my belief and nothing else?

  22. 22 mbaker December 18, 2007 at 9:02 pm

Actually, Jim it sounds as if that is what the man is trying to do, come in by the back door as it were. But rather than draw the same conclusion you and I would from the results, he apparently believes faith should show some kind of different brain levels, and if it doesn’t then, uh-oh, that proves there is no God to him.

    http://de-conversion.com/2007/12/13/how-smart-does-one-have-to-be-to-know-jesus/

I recently had an interesting discussion at this atheist blog about a particular evidential argument for the Divinity of Christ. I thought it was pretty interesting.

  24. 24 mbaker December 21, 2007 at 9:39 am

It was an excellent and informative discussion I thought. The kind of calm, well thought out dialogue I appreciate. A thing that struck me after reading all the comments was the similarity in the different commentators writings, such as paragraph construct, length of sentences, language, etc; as if there were several of them written by the same person. I could be wrong but during my years in newspaper work, I saw this happen in the letters to the editor section, when people felt so strongly about an issue they would write several letters under different names. Of course, a trained editor could easily spot that. That’s why most newspapers require a verifiable address and phone number. I even reread the entire thread and was still left with that impression. Nevertheless, a good discussion. Helps one to know how atheists and de-conversionists think.

    Catholics…

Just kidding… This kind of blatant dishonesty (it is dishonesty - a scholar has read enough to know better) is really frustrating, regardless of who the perpetrator and victim are.

I don’t know if you’ve hear of Justin Fatica or his ministry “Hard as Nails” but I was just sitting here watching an HBO special about it and thought you might find it interesting. Basically he takes a very over the top approach to evangelism and ministry; his techniques range from bringing an obese girl up front, calling her fat in front of the crowd and then yelling at them to clap for her to having someone hit him over the back with a chair to ‘represent Jesus’ love and suffering’ for them. The ministry is based out of the Catholic church and apparently has created some controversy there. Here are some links:

    Jim,

The long awaited interview with Ernie Gruen has been posted here:

This should put to rest any claims by the IHOP folks that they have seen a letter recanting his paper on the “Aberrant Practices of the Kansas City Fellowship”.

While I am a teetotaler in practice, I have gone back and forth on the issue philosophically/theologically. Thought-provoking read from Pastor Piper!

That was a great read. Many great points. IT is making me reconsider too.
