Daddy, its Pastor John!

"Daddy, it's Pastor John!"

For the last month or so, my daughter has been attending “big church” with mommy and daddy. Last Sunday (10/26/2008), about a quarter through Pastor John Piper’s message, Lydia leaned toward me and whispered, “Daddy, it’s Pastor John!” She then showed me the above sketch she had scribbled of Pastor John.

Priceless.

(The sermon last Sunday, Proclaiming the Excellencies of Christ, Not Prosperity, Among the Nations, was a doozie. I hadn’t been cut open like that for some time.)

I think this is a message which should resonate with all of us. We have been so comfortable in our prosperity as a nation, that more and more our personal sense of security has rested upon that rather than upon proclaiming Christ, and providing adequately for those missionaries who do.

Dr. Piper is right when he says it isn’t the lack of money of money that keeps missionaries from going to the 1568 peoples of the world, it’s our tendency to keep more and more to spend on ourselves in prosperous times. Sometimes we all need reminders of what our real job is as Christians, and that is preaching the gospel to all the world.
