I listen to podcasts at work via my Microsoft Zune. I checked the Zune Marketplace today (6/2/2008) and searched for podcasts under the “Religion & Spirituality” category. Above are listed the top ten podcasts by popularity.
Like it or not, Brother Osteen seems to be the face of American Christianity, taking the first and third spots. Osteen’s reign is interrupted only by Oprah Winfrey’s Spirit Channel. This seems to be the same podcast that ranks in at number 20 – Oprah and Eckhart Tolles’ “A New Earth” Online Class. I won’t jump on the Oprah-is-the-Antichrist bandwagon (yet), but Daniel at Heart of Flesh has begun an excellent survey of this very popular New Age teaching.
The top ten also includes Word of Faith gurus, Creflo Dollar and Joyce Meyer.
On the bright side, the top ten does include The Bible Podcast, a reading of one chapter of the Bible every weekday, and Covenant Worldwide: Old Testament History.
This seems to be, for better and (mostly) worse, a fairly good picture of the teaching imbibed by the average American Christian.
