Brett Favre, Overrated?
2008 March 10

As a native Minnesotan, Vikings fan and Packers reviler, I always assumed my view of Brett Favre as a hugely overrated QB was a symptom of nativist bias.
Apparently not:

And I suppose his pitiful supporting cast during the second half of his career doesn’t count for anything?
Uh-oh. I knew this might be dangerous ground to tread!
First, I don’t think Favre is terrible or even average. In his prime, he was great. An honest look at his career as a whole, however, offers a pretty mixed bag. As a Vikings fan, I’ve seen the good and the bad from Number 4. While Favre is certainly a first-ballot Hall-of-Famer, I don’t think he automatically makes the Top 5 or even Top 10 of all time QBs.
Secondly, he has played with decent receivers, even in the last half of his career. While he didn’t play with any HoF receivers like Rice or Harrison, he did play with guys like Sharpe and Driver. Also, contemporary QBs like Tom Brady have been putting up Top 5 numbers with mediocre receivers. (Before this past season, Brady’s best receiver was probably Deion Branch.)
P.S. I don’t know if you listen to KFAN’s Dan Barreiro (you’re a Twin Cities guy, aren’t you?), but he has a hilarious ongoing bit with a Packer fan, Carl Gerbschmidt. Here’s Carl’s reaction to Favre’s retirement:

Favorite line: (Through sobs) “At least we got Aaron Rodgers. He’s probably the best in the league now.”
Jim,
You’ll probably get more hate mail from this post then you would for a post that calls homosexuality an abomination to God.
Is calling Brett Favre hugely overrated a sin?
Not to dig up an old post here, but IF the Vikings land Favre and IF he has a huge season…is he still overrated?
1. The Vikings will not land Favre. Childress is, for better or worse (probably worse), committed to Tarvaris. And the Packers won’t release Favre – so, if he goes anywhere else, it will be through the Pack, and they’re not going to deal him to anyone else in the NFC North.
2. Yes, he would still be overrated.
Good answer. Safe answer, but it’s true.
Passer rating less than 90.
Completion percentage barely over 60%.
2 interceptions for every 3 touchdowns.
Not to mention the 140+ fumbles. (64 of those lost)
In 2006 his passer rating was lower than Rex Grossmans.. why weren’t we calling for Aaron Rogers to be played then?
Favre is a product of time on the field. He has records because he has played for so long without being hurt. I love Brett, but I would never put him in a discussion of the top 10 qb’s of all time. He got a lot of hype because he is sturdy and could throw rockets. On any given year he is maybe the top 3 or 4 qb in the league, especially since the Manning/Brady era.
Please keep your word after you cry in front of the cameras, Mr. Favre. Thank you. And be sure to check out some of my postings making fun of you and some of your NFL mates at http://celebrityhaiku.wordpress.com/
The character Carl is portrayed as a Packer fan on KFAN, but in reality he is a Packer and Favre hater, as indicated by the posts attributed to him on the JSOnline website. Sad, Sweddy. I am afraid you will not be able to cure yourself of the anger, until you look in the mirror, and admit your problem to yourself. That is the first step.

Gerbschmidt is a fictional character!?!? No! [SARCASM]
Silly Packer fans…
Very nice Packers information. I think Favre will be an immediate hall-of-famer.
I hope to be in Green Bay for a game this fall. I am visiting from Peru.
