I am preparing a post on the death penalty right now, but couldn’t resist posting this news story from Fox News.
Tillie, who was armed with a handgun, shot Parker in the side of the head and in the arm after Ford stopped for gas, but before he could fire a third shot, Goggins jumped over the seat between her mother and Tillie, begging him to stop, the Detroit News reported. Without hesitation, Tillie reportedly pumped six shots into the child.

Mr. Tillie has inspired me to post these horrendous items whenever I see them as a way to display the sickness of a society that refuses to deal appropriately with those members who exhibit a wanton disregard for human life. Mr. Tillie is “Exhibit A” in the case for a swift and expanded implementation of capital punishment in this nation.
Swift, because Mr. Tillie’s victims should not be required to wait years and decades for justice. I believe a convicted person facing capital punishment should be allotted, at most, 12-18 months for appeal. Those involved in the system know that a death row inmate will string out a series of appeals over several years, not because there is any legitimate belief in innocence or a miscarriage of justice, but merely to postpone the inevitable. A system could be established wherein competent counsel for the convict could put forward every possible and reasonable appeal in one hearing.
Expanded, because I don’t believe premeditated murder is the only crime worthy of execution. Here, for example, Mr. Tillie had every intention of destroying a woman and her young daughter. What sense does it make to award Mr. Tillie with a lesser sentence, because he failed to accomplish his deadly aims? He did, after all, discharge eight rounds at close range into his two victims. His incompetence should not serve as a mitigating factor in his charging or sentencing.
Also, I believe most Americans would consent to executing child rapists and other violent sexual predators. I don’t know where it is written that only those who successfully murder another human being are eligible for execution.
I look forward to the discussions that arise from this series. I am particularly interested in a critique of capital punishment from a Christian/Biblical perspective.

My daughter’s step brother was shot point blank Friday night by an unknown person, and he subsequently died a few hours later. He had a history of drugs so that is suspected to have been a causative factor. It’s been my observation that with the penal system so overcrowded, there is a tendency for the courts to go much too lightly on folks who commit violent crimes of any kind, even if it is predmeditated. Then add attorney’s with an eye for making a name for themselves in a sensational trial, which draws lots of media attention, and you have a recipe for social disaster, rather than social justice.
My personal opinion is that we need to castrate repeated sex offenders and others who commit sexual crimes, then apply capital punishment if they repeat the crime. Experts say pedophilia is the worst type of sexual crime to be rehabilitated from, but I should think if capital punishment were in the mix again, rather than a sympathetic slap on the hand from liberal judges, that might at least make some of these sick perpetrators think twice.

I am very sorry to hear of the loss of your daughter’s step brother. I cannot imagine losing a loved one to violent crime.
I already have a few more ‘exhibits’ in the vault, but didn’t think the Christmas season was the best time to release them.
